September 21 our class celebrated Peace One Day.  A day of cease fire and non-violence.  Our class read about Peace One Day and brainstormed how we could make a difference in the world.  We decided to practice peace by embarking on a journey to build a positive habit of gratitude.  Our Gratitude Journal was a place to write what we are grateful for and any random act of kindness we witnessed and partook in.  This month on October 21 we will be connecting with the founder of Peace One Day Jeremy Gilley via Skype.  After watching his documentary A Day After Peace (below) students are brainstorming how we can grow our sense of peace by working as a classroom community and give back to the world.

Visiting Mother Nature...

10/9/2015

At The School Garden

We are studying and taking care of our school garden. We are finding interesting and factual spices such as crickets and beetles. We are also picking weeds from the garden and putting them in the school compost bucket. We recently cleaned the bird feeders, refilled them and got a new one from the O'Riley family, thank you so much!!!

On the Trails...

Our class went behind the school into the woods on the Mill Pond trails to observe nature. We saw leaves dancing around us, with all different colors. I saw mushrooms popping out of the ground, The wildlife and trees above us were so tall and huge you couldn't even put your arms around it. The walnuts were split in half so you could see the hollow inside them. The squirrels were gathering nuts for the winter.  All outside was so extraordinary. You don't even notice how beautiful it is outside until you use all your senses. It was an awesome field trip outside in the wild! Our class then developed poems by using our noticing from our notebooks and wrote about what we saw and how we took our senses and used them in the wildlife.  We will post our poems soon.

More on the Moon

We learned new ways to show the moon phases and it helped us understand the orbit of the moon and it's phases better.  We held a foam ball (moon) in the air while turning ourselves (earth) around  in an orbit while our partner shined a flashlight at the ball to represent the sun.  We noticed the new moon, the waxing and waning crescents, the first and last quarter, the  waxing and waning gibbous, and the full moon.

Make Lunar Phases...

Stack Them...
O.R.E.O. Project

Thanks to Projects by Jen Wagner we participated in the annual O.R.E.O. Project; Our Really Exciting On-line Project).

We did an experiment with Oreos! We stacked the Oreos on top of each other. We tried to stack as many Oreos as possible, with out them tipping over!!!! The highest amount was 26 Oreos stacked on top of each other.

~ By Clare and Camden

Now that we recorded our data we will analyze; find the maximum Oreos stacked, the minimum, mode, median,  range and average.  We will then compare our information with classrooms from around the world who also participated in the challenge to stack the Oreos.

What strategy did you use when stacking the Oreos?
